What end mill for brass? Copper? The Hobby-Machinist

03/12/2019  The wisdom of the reference books says to blunt the edges of a standard end mill with a stone, similar to how you would modify a drill bit for brass or plastic. I believe Karl Moltrecht and Harold Hall cover this in the cutter sections of their books. It may even be in the Army technical manual. Anyway, the idea is that you present a square or negative raked cutting edge to soft metals.

Tips on milling brass - The Home Machinist!

16/04/2010  No cutting fluid, coolant or oil, go dry. It does tend to grab cutters, which means you want the piece secured very well and no excessive slop in any axis of the mill. I have little milling experience on brass, but considerable turning experience. Biggest problem on the lathe is parting, as the tool wants to dig in, just compensate with slower, steady feed. Not sure how this will translate to milling, but my

Brass – Bantam Tools

The easiest tools to use are 1/8" and 1/16" flat or ball end mills. Brass is one of the less forgiving materials, and it’s easy to break small tools with too high of a feed rate, inadequate fixturing, or simply having uneven material. The 1/8" and 1/16" end mills are very strong, and they can cut away a lot of material at once.

Metal-Cutting End Mills McMaster-Carr

When one end wears out, switch to the opposite end for two times the life of a standard carbide end mill. Made of solid carbide, these end mills are harder, stronger, and more wear resistant than high-speed steel and cobalt steel for the longest life and best finish on hard material. Use them to round sharp corners on the edge of your workpiece.

Milling Parameters

The end mill speed is calculated with the following formula: n [rpm] = (vc [m/min] *1000) / 3.14 * ø d1 [mm]) Example calculation: vc = 500 m/min (selected from chart) d = ø 8 mm 19904 rpm = (500 *1000) / (3.14 * 8). If the maximum speed of the milling motor is lower than the calculated value, the maximum speed of the milling motor needs to be inserted into the formula for the feed calculation.
